The murder of Giulio Regeni and the politics of the coverage – The Listening Post (Full)

On January 25, the day that marked the 5th anniversary of the Egyptian uprising, a 28 year old student went missing.

His lifeless body was later found, battered and tortured, dumped by the side of a road.

The case has spiralled into a diplomatic incident because the victim, Giulio Regeni, wasn’t Egyptian.

He was an Italian PhD student living in Cairo, doing research into a movement that represents a challenge to the Sisi government’s hold on power – organised labour.
